7 Ideas For More Mindful Eating
If you feel like eating gives you more anxiety than pleasure, you’re not alone.
For many many years I white-knuckled my way through bland tuna packs, fat-free dressing, dry bread, or unsatisfying gulps of a dish as I numbed out to work or television….or while hiding in the pantry.
Getting out of diet culture & healing my relationship with food has made eating FUN again (never thought I’d say that!).
These days I celebrate flavor, texture, aroma, ambiance & slowww down while savoring meals.
It's something that I geek out about with clients in their own process ALL THE TIME. I love witnessing their personal path in adopting more authentic joy through meals & which tools resonate at different phases of their healing journey.
A few examples of tools that help along the way:
Start with 1 meal or snack to eat more mindfully- for me, lunch was the easiest & I built from there.
Turn off technology & turn UP the background music (I love “French Cafe” on Spotify).
Set the table. You don’t have to re-vamp your entire dinnerware, just start with 1 pretty plate or bowl (or use what you’ve got!). I love to grab dishes on the Sale table at Anthropologie or in funky thrift stores.
Create a mood. Dim the lights at night, light a candle, take your meal outside during the day or to a place with more natural light.
Add flavor. Seasonings, oils, dressing, dips- these are ESSENTIAL for more delicious meals. Stock you kitchen so that you’re ready.
Keep it simple. Whether you’re cooking from scratch, heating up a frozen meal or ordering takeout- start with the path of least resistance & shush your inner critic ;)
Celebrate + curiosity. Consider what you’re eating- HOW you’re eating it, what your body feels like. Savor the things that you like, note what you might do differently next time. And move forward.
