4 Reasons You Feel Addicted To Sugar And How To Stop

Sugar used to be my DOWNFALL.

I was constantly back & forth between mini binges and restricting myself from sweets for days.

Often times I'd come up with a random food rule just to keep me from eating dessert altogether in the name of “health”.

This struggle cycle went on for years. And it was exhausting

But I was finally able to end the war with sugar for myself (say what??? seriously cue the dance music).

I’ve walked countless clients through this process & want to share some insight with you.

If you’re constantly feeling controlled by sugar, you’re probably missing the following things:

1. Restricting carbs. Despite what you’re hearing from wellness culture, our mind + body NEEDS carbohydrates (especially women). And YES- carbs are broken down into glucose (natural sugar & essential brain fuel), so when our body doesn’t have the need met it’s going to let you know (hello candy bowl!).

2. Restricting sweets. Often times the mental limitation is enough to trigger preoccupation, even obsession (like saying “don’t think of an elephant…”).

3. Not eating ENOUGH food. Sugar is the quickest source of energy- which our body knows very well for survival (thank you body!). So when we don’t eat enough throughout the day, we’re more likely to crave sweets.

4. Emotional needs aren’t being met. So many times we push this to the side & power through- but pleasure, connection, fun, asking for support, expression- things in life that satisfy our soul are ESSENTIAL.

If you feel duped, you're not alone. Diet culture teaches us to believe that sugar is the problem.

But this struggle really has nothing to do with sugar itself or your willpower.

Alright, time for a deep breath and a major dose of self-compassion. The awesome news is, you don't have to spend your life battling the physical, mental, or emotional hurdle of sugar or any other food for that matter!

Through focusing on healing these 4 complex restrictions, with patience and practice, you’ll be on your way to a calmer relationship with sweets and yourself.
