Your No Fail Green Smoothie

Green smoothies. Does the phrase make you want to throw your social media infested phone out the window, or ditch your desk to find the closest juice bar? Well simmer down for a minute- I’m here to empower you with a recipe that will undoubtedly strike a new habit, or fuel an existing one.

If you’re new to the smoothie train, I can’t encourage you enough to hop on. This is hands down one of the best ways to flood your body with essential nutrients + getting your skin to glow. Because food is already broken down through the blending process, it frees up loads of extra energy that would otherwise be used for digestion. And unlike most juices, the fiber that’s maintained within the fruits and vegetables keeps us full for a more natural period of time. Buh-bye 10 AM bagel dilemma.

Sooo smoothies. They’re good.

But I get it- they’re kind of intimidating. It’s a pain in the butt to haul out your blender from the back of the cabinet and wash it afterward. Plus, most of the time you just wind up feeling hungry an hour later anyway.

This recipe is a gamechanger, girls. Not only will it eliminate 2 out of 3 of those concerns (the blender anxiety is another story), but it will give you complete creative freedom for all of your future smoothie inspirations, once you have the proper ratio nailed down.

I love starting my day with this. No, not because it’s trendy and will keep me on par with my Instagram game. I look at this as my little insurance policy, before heading out the door…

Life happens. We WANT life to happen- the unexpected happy hour with co-workers, sidestepping your perfectly prepped salad for lunch out with your bestie, a totally last minute date with this new guy you’re into. Feel me? When we roll with the punches and show up for the things that bring us that authentic joy, our innate happiness begins to reveal itself. BUT, that doesn’t have to come at the expense of your health. This smoothie is the perfect way to leverage the essential hydration + greens that you need for the day, regardless of any unexpected plans that pop up. The best kind of insurance, if you ask me.

Some quick points to keep in mind, without all of the boring science…

Greens: Lucky for you, there’s a 2 for 1 deal here. When we incorporate this piece into our smoothies, we not only supply our bodies with nourishing fiber that sustains our hunger. Greens also contain a substantial amount of water that supports our hydration, as well as detoxification process. If the idea of adding in something that resembles your barely touched side salad freaks you out, start simply. Spinach has a super mild taste that’s practically unnoticeable when blended with the other ingredients. You’re in good hands here- promise ;)

Fruit: Stick with the recommended 1 full serving. The naturally occurring sugars can lead to a mid-morning crash, just as a jelly donut might if eaten in excess. Embrace this beautiful natural candy, just don’t abuse it.

Fat: Your secret weapon for sustained hunger. More often than not, we are depriving ourselves of this nutritional component, which can lead to some pretty crazy cravings throughout your day. The 90’s might be “in” at the moment, but we can leave the fat-free craze behind for good.

No Fail Green Smoothie (Serves 1)

  • 2 handfuls of spinach (greens)

  • 1 frozen banana (fruit)

  • ½ avocado (fat)

  • Pinch of sea salt

  • 1 cup liquid of choice (ex. almond milk, filtered water)

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients and blend well until smooth and creamy. 

Your turn. Once you’ve given this a couple of test runs, make it your own! Think adding in cinnamon, chia seeds, hemp hearts. Switch out your greens- kale, romaine, collards etc. Swap the fat- coconut oil, nut butter, etc. For an added bonus, toss in a scoop of high-quality protein powder. As long as the measurements fall in line with the original recipe, you really can’t mess this up.
