How to Find Your Perfect Health Coach
My grandma had a longtime adoration for the shopping network, QVC. I’d come barreling into her home to find a designated section of her dining room table filled with the latest buys. Tupperware, makeup, fashion jewelry- the woman loved to shop. I can only imagine what her Amazon cart would look like these days, had she known how to navigate that part of the internet!
Me on the other hand? Not an impulse buyer...Okay, that’s not entirely true- the “buy now with one click” button has definitely put me in the danger zone a time or two. But can’t I just chalk that up to be a generational thing?
I’ll tell you where I really get hung up in investing my money though... services...with people. I strategically get my hair done twice a year because I break out into a cold sweat every time I hand my credit card over at the end of the appointment. I can’t even count on one hand the number of times I’ve had a manicure…And those are just 2 examples…
My appointment with a naturopathic doctor though? No brainer. Definitely a step outside of my financial comfort zone, but well worth it and for one major reason- I had seen her speak in person before booking my first session. There was an initial connection. I also had several other friends raving about this particular doctor on the sidelines, which didn’t hurt my decision.
Similar story with the relationship coach that my fiancé and I are currently working with. After subscribing to her podcast for a period of time, our paths happened to cross at a business event. Again- the powerful connection was formed. I began our conversation feeling like we were old friends because of my continued interest in the message she had been putting out into the world. After speaking with her, I felt safe not only investing my time and money but also confiding some vulnerable details about our relationship.
What am I getting at here?? My point is that these days you don’t have to schlep through the yellow pages to find someone who may or may not work well with you. Most coaches have prioritized being personable. So before you get defeated or sign up with the first consultant that you come across, do a bit of digging….read through their blog, sign up for a workshop that they might be hosting, follow their Insta Stories or Facebook Live’s. Get to know them.
In the meantime, I’ve whipped up some additional food for thought when beginning your search for a health coach…
Find Someone Who Resonates with You
You’re in luck, lady- the wellness market is nothing short of eager health coaches who are ready to help you reach your goals. That being said, finding someone who works best for your individual needs is crucial to success. What does this mean? Welp, the options are plentiful...do you want to meet in person, or does coaching from the comfort of your own coach seem more appealing? Does it matter if the person is around your age? What’s the goal that you’re coming to them with and what do they specialize in? When you skim through their website or Instagram page, do you feel like they’re speaking to you? Have patience- the right person for you IS out there.
Living in the age of social media certainly has its advantages as well as pitfalls...is it really that necessary to stalk your high school’s prom queen to see if she’s divorced, or has three kids...or both? Maybe not. But doing some background research on potential coaches can have major gains. My suggestion here is picking a few to follow so that you can really get to know their message well. Want to take it one step further? Start engaging through the comments section of pictures they’re sharing that strike a chord with you. And don’t underestimate the power of private messaging- this can be a great way to build a rapport with someone before signing up for their services.
Take Full Advantage of the Discovery Session
For any coaches that you’re thinking about working with, this tip is a must. Most offer a discovery call or coffee meet up at a nominal rate, if not complimentary. This is a great way to learn more about their coaching style and is more often used to determine if the two of you would work well together. This is not the time to be bashful- do your research, ask questions and if it doesn’t feel like a natural fit to work with them, move along in your search! No hard feelings here- you’ve gotta do what’s best for you.
Understand the Real Investment
True, working with a health coach (albeit a GOOD one!) can certainly lighten the weight of your wallet. However, the financial investment can be incredibly strategic compared to the fad diets, self-help books, workout gear and cooking equipment that eventually finds it’s way to the back of your closet. The one major difference in working with a coach is the accountability component. You’ve come to them with a specific health problem and are essentially paying to help you reach a goal. This in return speaks to two very important pieces of the monetary value. 1. Their Time: These are professionals who’ve built their business around serving others. When you sign on to work with someone privately, their focus on your needs stems far beyond each session. And 2. Your Emotional Investment: Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve geared up to purchase a program (language, cooking, workout- you name it..). Just before you head to check out a friend casually mentions that they’ve got an extra copy that they can lend you. For free. You’re ecstatic. Of course, you accept the offer- this is a no-brainer. However, do you actually stick with the commitment? Investing financially might feel like a big pill to swallow, but it certainly adds the “skin in the game” element to your journey.
If you’re reading this, chances are that you’ve been doing a bit of soul-searching. Tired of trying to navigate this whole wellness space? Burnt out by a pesky health or beauty problem? Maybe you’re simply looking for someone to motivate you to eat more greens. A health coach can be the perfect person to unlock a completely new lifestyle approach.
Wishing you all the best on your journey to finding the one who can take you from good to great, who constantly inspires, reminds you that the real work comes from within, and creates humor out of the bumps that life throws us. Cheers!
