Jess Baumgardner is a pregnancy and motherhood mentor, positivity ambassador, and mother of 2.5. After a decade in marketing, she left her well-paid career and found her true calling in leading the way to a balanced psyche and healthier body. A creative wizard of real and educational moments, she connects with women and guides them through the wonders and struggles of motherhood. When she’s not working, you can find her on coffee dates, snuggling with her girls, planning the next @thegoodfest and enjoying sour gummies.
How do you usually start your mornings?
I start my mornings differently, but generally they look like this: Wake up when first kid wakes up. I have tried waking up earlier than them to exercise, and I really want to make this happen, but the anxiety of not knowing when they will wake up keeps me from doing this. I go downstairs and make the kids breakfast and lunches. I eat something myself. And I make a very large bottle of lemon water to take with me for the day (which I will fill up again).
What get's you excited about the work that you do?
I'm moving into a niche that I should have moved into 4 years ago! I am finally hearing the call to move into work with women who are mothers or looking to be mothers soon. These are the clients I feel the most connected to, probably because motherhood is such a HUGE part of my life right now and I have seen how it can also require a lot of self-work.
How would you describe your ideal client?
I help women reclaim their confidence so they can find balance in life as new moms (or moms-to-be or mom-curious!).
What’s one piece of advice you teach consistently, that would help someone take action today?
Try not to worry and protect your energy! In my new Mama Connect online program, I talk a lot about this. I also wrote an article here for The Fullest about it.
Let's segue to girl talk... Where do you get most of your clothes?
I wear a ton of athleisure clothing, especially because I make my own schedule and don't have to be super dressed up for anyone. Most of my work happens over the phone, anyway!
I have recently found a shop called Z Supply and at first I thought it was going to be an instagram-ad-fraud, but the clothes are SO CUTE, stylish, and comfortable and will really come in handy for postpartum.
Outside of this, I pretty much wear black yoga pants and soft tops. Sneakers. I have completely cleaned out my closet, so I don't have a ton of clothing right now and am keeping things super simple.
What’s the best TV show you’ve binge-watched?
Binge-watching is not really a thing with my schedule and 2 kids, but I LOVE the show Billions. I love shows that deal with things I would never (I hope) experience: drugs, money laundering, mafia, that kind of stuff. I also really love watching super-smart people, even if they are a bit corrupt in their character.
Can you describe what a night of self-care would look like for you?
I put on a hair mask and a face mask at the same time, sit in my bed for 15 minutes while they set and read or online shop. Wash it all out and use a face scrub, my favorite smelling lotions and oils and serums and cozy up with my blanket to watch TV with John and a homemade meal. I try to do this once a week. And before bed, each night, I've been practicing self-reiki!
Which girl boss are you currently inspired by?
MANY! Right now, I really love the founders of @mother.ly - Jill and Liz - their platform is bringing amazing, real content to moms.
What’s one wellness trend that you have on your list to try?
I really want to get more into the facial skin manipulation (lol) stuff — jade rolling, gua sha, dermarolling. I have a dermaroller and a gua sha stone but don't use them regularly and really feel like they would be helpful for my 35-year old skin.
